Sister Sledge: "Thinking of You (Ramp Mix)"

Maybe I should just give this blog over to Chic remixes. I've lit upon yet another that's making me hear the Chic.Org oeuvre less as a series of discrete masterpieces than a structure of desire that compels infinite tinkering. The tinkered this time is "Thinking of You," overshadowed so much by the great 1979 Sister Sledge triumvirate ("We Are Family," "He's the Greatest Dancer," and, their greatest dancer, "Lost in Music") that it didn't become a hit until 1984. Ramp wakes the song up with a speedier BPM and renders the ache in the strings less subliminal by giving its lines to a classic house piano hook. Still understated and elegant, it's crucially more jumpy, putting the fear back into a song I now understand as a celebration of a new romance. "I'm in love again and it feels so so good" freezes Kathy Sledge in moony transport. But Ramp gives her a history, catching the pain of past breakups and the hope that this feeling so so good keeps dancing forever.
